Mental Health Awareness Club Events Officer
Club Mission: provide students in the College of Online and Continuing Education, with or without mental illness, with an opportunity to gain knowledge about various mental illnesses and ways to help stop the stigma that may be used in their own lives. Our goal is to raise awareness of mental health and wellness throughout the COCE student community. Specifically, we are focused on mental health issues and prevention measures in order to reduce stigma and increase understanding of these complex issues. Responsibilities: Promote all events for the organization within SNHUconnect or other organization properties (email) to all members to encourage participation. I identify a theorist (Sigmund Freud), summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the biological perspective and provide an example of how this biological perspective applies to my lived experience. I discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens, the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions with a non-clinical view, and how an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit/weakness can be reframed and reapplied as a strength.

A project where I complete a case study analysis about a women named Jamie. I describe ways in which Piaget's and Vygotsky's research applies to Jamie's development, identify factors that could have influenced Jamie's physical, cognitive, and psychosocial well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development, evaluate the sociocultural factors that could contribute to Jamie's maladaptive behavior, and explain the importance of considering physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination through the lifespan when evaluating an individual's well-being.

Abnormal Psychology Milestone
A milestone which focuses on desconstructing the stigma associated with abnormal behavior. I describe a common psychological reaction that a person might have after being described as weird, why witnessing an abnormal behavior may cause a person to experience psychological discomfort, the feelings a person may experience when witnessing a behavior that deviates from the norm, and how abnormalities in the mind are not really different from other physical or biological abnormalities.

In this milestone, I review the Pew Research article "Social Media and the Cost of Caring" and weight the costs and benefits of frequent exposure to social media. I describe the cost and benefit of frequent social media use, describe the link between our awareness of other people's stressful life events on social media and increases in our own stress using the research findings, describe how social media can promote the levels of education and awareness, and how I would use social media to enhance compassion and empathy.

In this milestone, I use the Four D's diagnostic indicators to analyze one behavior that might impair a person's adaptive daily functioning. I described the extent to which a person with a phobia causes distress, dysfunction, danger, and deviance.

An activity where I selected a behavior (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and describe the possible biological, psychological, and social/cultural origins of the selected behavior and the relationship between the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. I also select two behaviors (Phobias and panic disorders) that are known to share symptomatology and explain the ways in which the symptoms overlap and the potential diagnostic challenges presented by the overlap.

A project where I create a blog post. I select three mental disorders (Post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and social anxiety disorder) and identify and describe the main diagnostic features and consider the biomedical, clinical, historical, and sociocultural factors of each of the disorders selected. I then selected one of the disorders (Post-traumatic stress disorder) to consider the bidirectional relationship between the disorder and physical illness, describe how the words we use when discussing the disorder influence our willingness or ability to manage the disorder, and describe the small, but significant, changes in attitude/behavior we can make the could help us to manage the symptoms of the disorder.

Applied Social Sciences Research investigation
A research investigation on the mental health effects of civilians caused by war-related trauma. The paper includes a description of the social science resources I used, an explanation of how the social science principles (social norms, social institutions, social roles, and beliefs and values) apply to the relationship between war and the mental health of civilians, and addresses who the audience would be.
