Tre'Mesha Harrison

Majored in Biology, Minored in Concentration In Molecular Biology
Elmira College, Class of 2022
From Cooperstown, NY
I love learning about infectious diseases, viruses or anything that triggers an immune response. I enjoying traveling and being able to study abroad is something I dream of doing more in the future. I love to write poetry, sing and dance whenever I can! Some of my best achievements have been through learning. Two things I believe you can never do enough of: learning and laughing and I enjoy doing both, even when life is hard.

- While I was attending BUHS I was elected to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders at University of Massachusetts Amherst. During this conference I learned so much from some of the world's newest medical inventors and I met and spoke with Carmen B Tarleton, one of the first few people to ever undergo a full face transplant surgery. It was a moving experience and it was awesome to attend a conference with intelligent, innovative people of the medical society. - I was awarded An Award of Excellence after attending the conference and I am now an Alumni of the community.

Term III Trip to The Big Island of Hawaii Through this Field Biology Course , we were to develop an understanding of species diversity and distribution by understanding biogeography and its relationship to Island Ecology. As students, we spent most of our time learning about the ecological changes happening in our very own community. We hiked, and learned how to take ecological samples of different types of trees in various locations in Elmira and Ithaca NY. We spent two weeks exploring the Big Island Of Hawaii. We were chaperoned by two Elmira College professors, Dr. Daniel Kjar and Dr. Betsy Smith and they were able to further explain the ecological changes happening on the Big Island of Hawaii and how these processes relate to species diversity and distribution. We traveled all over the Island and visited many different places including one of four, of the world's green sand beaches. We visited a local coffee and macadamia nut farm where we were able to buy local coffee, crush and taste fresh macadamia nuts and pick our own avocados! We hiked to many different locations including volcanoes, a volcano crater and visited many other popular sites like Hawai'i National Volcanoes Park. The trip so far, is at the top of my list for favorite trips and I wish to revisit the island again one day.

Elmira College Obler Summer Research Program
Throughout Term II 2019, five other students and myself assisted three Elmira college professors in research. The project I helped work on was environmentally focused and we were to collect data from lakes and ponds to determine what type of organic polar compounds were contaminating freshwater systems. Three other students and myself worked hard to complete a research poster in which we presented two months later at the 3rd Joint Symposium conference on the island of San Salvador, Bahamas; alongside many other students and professors. The conference consisted of listening to different geologist and researchers from all over the world. We even got to hear the inside scoop from Exxon mobile researchers. It was a great time to gain in field experience and will be something I will remember forever. I will never take for granted air conditioning as some days consisted of heat exhaustion and the beaming sun. Snorkeling, cave walking, hikes and swimming to the ocean drop off are some of my most breath taking memories. But, I will forever savor the memories of how great a field lunch can taste after a long day of hiking and doing science in the field.
