June, 06 2017 - Verified by Georgia State UniversityAs an Immigration Legal Services Assistant at Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), I provided critical legal support to attorneys and legal professionals specializing in immigration law. My responsibilities included preparing petitions and applications for various immigration benefits, such as Adjustment of Status (I-485), Employment Authorization (I-765), Asylum (I-589), Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), U-visas, T-visas, and Naturalization. I communicated directly with clients to gather necessary information, answer questions about the immigration process, and ensure they understood their rights. Additionally, I provided translation and interpretation services, facilitating clear communication between attorneys, clients, and government agencies. I managed case files and databases, ensuring that all client documents and case-related correspondence were well-organized and up to date. Beyond legal support, I assisted with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, drafting correspondence, and conducting Know Your Rights presentations. To maintain the security and confidentiality of sensitive client information, I was required to complete cybersecurity training annually, reinforcing best practices to protect both the organization and the individuals we served. Additionally, as part of KINDs empowerment goals for the year, I completed the Google IT Professional Certification, further expanding my technical skills and knowledge. My role at KIND allowed me to make a meaningful impact by helping vulnerable immigrant children and their families navigate the complex legal system and secure the protection they needed.
As a Paralegal at Catholic Charities of Atlanta (CCA), I played a vital role in providing legal support to immigrants seeking various forms of relief and legal status. My responsibilities included preparing petitions and applications for immigrant visas, such as Adjustment of Status (I-485), Employment Authorization (I-765), Asylum (I-589), U-visas, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and Naturalization. I managed case files, ensured timely submission of applications, and responded to requests for evidence from USCIS. Additionally, I handled client communications via phone, email, and postal correspondence, assisted in scheduling visa interviews at U.S. consulates, and liaised with government agencies like USCIS, the Department of Labor, and the National Visa Center to troubleshoot case issues. Beyond legal support, I performed various administrative duties, maintained the case management database, and assisted with client intakes and mailings. To ensure the safety and confidentiality of sensitive client information, we were also required to complete cybersecurity training, which helped protect both the organization and the individuals we served from potential cyber threats. CCA serves more than 6,000 clients annually, offering low-cost and high-quality legal immigration services. Being part of a dedicated, multilingual team specializing in immigration law, I was committed to ensuring that individuals and families received the legal assistance they needed to obtain lawful status and navigate the complex immigration system successfully.
I also had the opportunity to volunteer with the Immigration Lawyers team at the Catholic Charities in Atlanta (CCA), learned how to use their database LawLogix and CaseyWorthy, translated documents from Spanish to English, helped with closing file, helped with reception, and did tasks asked by colleagues.
I have had the opportunity to do an internship with the Refugee Resettlement Program, providing support for the Central American Minors (CAM) program. Our work focused on helping families navigate the complex reunification process by assisting them with the necessary paperwork. Through this program, we help eligible parents in the U.S. apply for their children to join them safely, giving families hope for a future together. It is a meaningful experience to support individuals who have endured hardship and to play a role in reuniting loved ones. Knowing that our efforts can help bring families back together makes this work incredibly fulfilling and impactful.
I worked at Atlanta Stone Creations, where we specialized in selling high-quality stone materials, including granite, marble, quartz, Neolith, and Dekton. Our focus was on providing customers with premium surfaces for kitchens, bathrooms, and other custom projects. I gained valuable experience in the stone industry, assisting clients in selecting the best materials to suit their needs, whether for residential or commercial spaces. My role involved understanding the unique properties of each type of stone, helping customers make informed decisions, and ensuring a smooth sales process. Working in this industry allowed me to develop strong customer service skills and a keen eye for design, as well as gain insight into the craftsmanship involved in fabricating and installing stone surfaces.
