Communicative Barriers Existing in Counseling Services for International Students at Universities
Compared with domestic students, international students at American colleges and universities are often facing more difficulties and challenges, which can affect their academic, social and emotional well-being, as well as mental health. As a professional service, college and university counseling and psychological service play a vital role in helping and ensuring international students safety, healthy, and comfortable environment for their development. However, international students often have a low rate of utilization or returning to the counseling service as compared to domestic students. The current study aims to examine the communicative barriers that may prevent international students from using the service and barriers that may affect the communication between counselors and students. Then, suggestions such as increasing advocacy and education of counseling service to students and increasing counselors’ cultural understanding are promoted to better help international students in the future.
