Tiffany Zorn

Student at USC Aiken majoring in Secondary and Middle Level Education
I am a senior at the University of South Carolina Aiken. As a secondary and middle level comprehensive social studies education major, along with certification to teach Gifted and Talented (GT), I am passionate about encouraging and supporting students, insomuch that equity within the classroom is of vital importance to me. Currently, I am conducting undergraduate research within the field of education. I hope to learn about how often secondary and middle level educators incorporate current events within their social studies classroom. I desire to one day work with a national or international organization that promotes educational equity. Such organizations include Teach for America, Peace Corps, and the United Nations. In order to do so, I will also be obtaining my Master's degree in an area related to international relations or nongovernmental organizations.

Color Deficiency Within the Classroom
Color deficiency is a unique disability that is often overlooked. Since knowledge on the subject is limited, so too are pedagogical strategies to address it. Individuals who experience color deficiency may find it difficult to analyze and interpret maps, charts, and images in their textbooks. They may struggle when asked to observe prism wavelengths, analyze pH results, or describe chemical reactions. Research suggests that there is likely to be at least one student in every class with a color deficiency. Yet, most teachers make little or no adjustment for these pupils. This article outlines specific strategies to provide accommodations and become a supportive adult advocate for students with color deficiency.
